7-Day Private Itinerary

Sri Lanka 7 Day Itinerary

The week most people picture when they think of Sri Lanka. Ancient cities, Kandy, the hill-country train down to Ella, then a day or two by the sea before you fly. It's a full week — you'll be up early more than once — but you leave having seen the icons.

The classic first-timer loop

About this itinerary

Seven days is the week that turns up in most people's heads when they imagine Sri Lanka, and for good reason. It threads the three things first-timers come for — the ancient Cultural Triangle, the misty hill country, and a stretch of the southern coast — into one loop that keeps moving without doubling back.

The centrepiece is the train ride from the hills down to Ella, one of the most beautiful rail journeys anywhere, which we build in rather than drive. Be honest with yourself about the pace, though: this is a full, early-start week. If slow mornings matter more than ticking every icon, the ten-day version gives the same route room to breathe.

When to go

December to April is ideal — the hill country and south coast are both at their best. It runs the rest of the year too; we just watch the forecast on the coast leg.

Trip highlights

  • Sigiriya and the Dambulla caves
  • Kandy temple and a Kandyan dance evening
  • The Kandy-to-Ella hill-country train
  • Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam's Peak
  • A first look at the south coast

Best for

First-time visitors who want the headline sights and don't mind a brisk pace.

Maybe not for

Travellers who like slow mornings. This one keeps moving, and trimming a stop is usually smarter than adding one.

Day by day

The route, one day at a time

A real, drivable plan — not a wish list. Every day flexes around your pace, and nothing here is fixed in stone. It's the starting point we shape with you.

  1. 1

Arrival and the road to Sigiriya

    Airport → Sigiriya · approx. 4 hr

We collect you and head north to the Cultural Triangle, breaking the drive with lunch and a stop or two. An easy evening near Sigiriya to shake off the flight.

    Overnight: Sigiriya / Habarana

  2. 2

Sigiriya Rock and an evening safari

    Sigiriya · Dambulla · Minneriya

Climb the Lion Rock at dawn, rest through the midday heat, then the Dambulla cave temples and an afternoon jeep safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla. A big day, front-loaded early so the light and the crowds are both on your side.

    Overnight: Sigiriya / Habarana

  3. 3

    South to Kandy

    Sigiriya → Kandy · approx. 2.5–3 hr

Down into the hills, a spice garden if you fancy it, and into Kandy for the afternoon. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth at puja time, a walk by the lake, and an optional Kandyan dance show in the evening.

    Overnight: Kandy

  4. 4

    The hill-country train to Ella

Kandy → Ella by rail · scenic day

The day everyone remembers. We handle the logistics and put you on the train as it climbs through tea estates and cloud forest to Ella, meeting you at the other end. Slower than the car, and completely worth it.

    Overnight: Ella

  5. 5

    Ella at its own pace

Ella · Nine Arch · Little Adam's Peak

A gentler day in the hill town. The walk to Nine Arch Bridge for a passing train, the short climb up Little Adam's Peak for the view, and Ravana Falls on the way past. Ella rewards not rushing.

    Overnight: Ella

  6. 6

    Down to the south coast

Ella → South Coast · approx. 4 hr

A long, lovely descent out of the hills to the sea. By afternoon you're on the south coast — Mirissa, Weligama or Unawatuna — with time for a first swim and a proper seafood dinner.

    Overnight: Mirissa / Weligama

  7. 7

    Galle Fort and departure

    Coast · Galle → Airport · approx. 2.5–3 hr

A morning wander through the old Dutch ramparts of Galle Fort before we time the drive to the airport around your flight. A strong last impression to end on.

Good to know before you go

  • We start early at big sites like Sigiriya — cooler air, softer light, far fewer people.
  • Temples ask for covered shoulders and knees; a light shawl in your day bag handles it.
  • Safari is wildlife, not a zoo. Dawn and late afternoon give the best odds, but nothing is guaranteed.
  • Hill-country train seats can't always be reserved far ahead; we book what's available and keep a backup plan.
  • Day six is the one long drive of the week; we set off early and break it well.
Tailor-made, not off-the-shelf

Questions about this trip

It's brisk, not brutal. You'll have a few early starts and one long drive off the hills, but the loop is designed so you're never backtracking. If you'd rather not set an alarm on holiday, look at the ten-day route — it's the same journey with the pressure taken off.
