Tea pickers on terraced green hills in Sri Lanka's hill country near Nuwara Eliya

10-Day Private Itinerary

Sri Lanka 10 Day Itinerary

Everything the seven-day loop covers, with the breathing room it's missing. The ancient triangle and Kandy, a proper run through tea country to Ella, a morning safari at Yala or Udawalawe, and real time on the south coast — two nights in one place, not a night here and a night there.

Duration

10 days · 9 nights

Route

Best season

Dec – Apr

The length most people wish they'd booked

About this itinerary

If you ask which length we'd actually book for a first trip, this is it. Ten days covers the same headline sights as the shorter loops but stops the schedule from running you — you get a second night in the places worth lingering in, and a morning that isn't spent packing the car.

The route builds naturally: the Cultural Triangle and its safaris, Kandy, then a proper pass through the tea country with a night in Nuwara Eliya before the Ella train. A dawn safari at Yala or Udawalawe, then the south coast, where two nights in one spot finally let you unwind. It suits couples, families and honeymooners who'd rather see things well than see everything.

When to go

December to April is the sweet spot for this hill-and-south routing. Outside those months we lean the coast portion toward wherever is driest.

Trip highlights

  • Sigiriya, Dambulla and a Cultural Triangle safari
  • Tea country and the scenic Ella train
  • Morning safari at Yala or Udawalawe
  • Galle Fort ramparts at sunset
  • Two nights on the coast to actually unwind

Best for

First visits where you'd rather see things well than tick every box. Couples, families and honeymooners land here most.

Maybe not for

Anyone locked to a five- or six-day window — this needs its full length to feel unhurried, and stretching it thin defeats the point.

Day by day

The route, one day at a time

A real, drivable plan — not a wish list. Every day flexes around your pace, and nothing here is fixed in stone. It's the starting point we shape with you.

  1. 1

Arrival and the road to Sigiriya

    Airport → Sigiriya · approx. 4 hr

Airport pick-up and an easy drive north, broken with lunch. Settle in near Sigiriya with nothing to prove on the first evening.

    Overnight: Sigiriya / Habarana

  2. 2

Sigiriya Rock and the Dambulla caves

    Sigiriya · Dambulla

The Lion Rock at dawn while it's cool and quiet, then the painted caves at Dambulla. An afternoon at leisure — this route has room for one, and you'll be glad of it.

    Overnight: Sigiriya / Habarana

  3. 3

Ancient city and an evening safari

    Polonnaruwa · Minneriya

The ruined royal city of Polonnaruwa in the morning, best explored slowly by bicycle among the stupas and stone Buddhas. In the late afternoon, a jeep into Minneriya or Kaudulla for the elephants.

    Overnight: Sigiriya / Habarana

  4. 4

    South to Kandy

    Sigiriya → Kandy · approx. 2.5–3 hr

Into the hills, a spice garden on request, and Kandy for the afternoon — the lakeside Temple of the Sacred Tooth and, if you like, a Kandyan dance performance in the evening.

    Overnight: Kandy

  5. 5

    Tea country to Nuwara Eliya

Kandy → Nuwara Eliya · approx. 3 hr

A gorgeous climb past Ramboda Falls into cooler air and endless tea terraces. We stop at a working tea factory to see how the day's leaf becomes your morning cup, and reach the colonial hill station of Nuwara Eliya by evening.

    Overnight: Nuwara Eliya

  6. 6

    The scenic train to Ella

Nanu Oya → Ella by rail

The most photographed stretch of the whole line. You take the train through tea estates and tunnels to Ella while we bring the car and luggage round to meet you. Afternoon to settle into the hill town.

    Overnight: Ella

  7. 7

    Ella's walks and waterfalls

Ella · Nine Arch · Little Adam's Peak

Nine Arch Bridge for a passing train, the easy climb up Little Adam's Peak, and Ravana Falls nearby. A day paced to enjoy rather than endure.

    Overnight: Ella

  8. 8

Safari and down to the coast

    Ella → Yala / Udawalawe → Coast · approx. 4 hr total

Out of the hills to a morning or afternoon safari — Yala for the leopard chance, Udawalawe for near-guaranteed elephants and a calmer park. Then on to the south coast for the first of two nights by the sea.

    Overnight: Mirissa / Weligama

  9. 9

    South coast and Galle Fort

    Mirissa · Galle

A slow coastal day. Whale watching from Mirissa in season (roughly November to April), a swim, and the ramparts of Galle Fort at sunset — the old Dutch town is at its best as the light drops.

    Overnight: Mirissa / Galle

  10. 10

    Departure

    Coast → Airport · approx. 2.5–3 hr

One more slow morning by the water before the drive back, timed around your flight. Ten days that leave you planning the next visit rather than recovering from this one.

No surprises

What's included, what isn't

Included

  • Private air-conditioned vehicle for the whole route
  • Licensed, English-speaking driver-guide
  • Fuel, parking, tolls and all driver expenses
  • Airport pick-up and drop-off
  • Hand-picked accommodation matched to your budget level
  • Bottled water on travel days
  • A schedule that bends to your pace, not a fixed timetable

Not included

  • International flights
  • Site and national-park entrance tickets (we pre-arrange these for you)
  • Safari jeep hire inside the parks (organised on your behalf)
  • Meals not specified in the plan
  • Personal spending, tips and travel insurance
  • Anything not listed under what's included
  • Hill-country train tickets (we reserve and manage these for you)

Good to know before you go

  • We start early at big sites like Sigiriya — cooler air, softer light, far fewer people.
  • Temples ask for covered shoulders and knees; a light shawl in your day bag handles it.
  • Safari is wildlife, not a zoo. Dawn and late afternoon give the best odds, but nothing is guaranteed.
  • Hill-country train seats can't always be reserved far ahead; we book what's available and keep a backup plan.
  • Whale watching from Mirissa runs roughly November to April; outside that window we swap in a coastal activity instead.
  • Yala closes for part of September each year for maintenance — if you're travelling then, Udawalawe is the safari we'll steer you to.
Tailor-made, not off-the-shelf

Questions about this trip

Because it's the point where the same route stops feeling like a race. You get a second night in the places that deserve one, a couple of unhurried mornings, and time to actually rest on the coast — without adding sights you'd only be glancing at anyway.
