Ancient rock fortresses, tea country trains, leopard territory and two coastlines of beaches — all a few hours apart. Here's where to point the van.
Where to go
Sri Lanka is smaller than Ireland, but drive four hours in any direction and the whole world changes — beach to rainforest, fort town to tea country, leopard territory to surf break. These are the ten places we get asked about most, described the way we'd describe them to a friend. Every one of them fits into a single trip if you plan it right — and planning it right is our whole job.
Sri Lanka has two monsoons that politely take turns — so somewhere on the island, the sun is always out. Here's the version of the weather chart we draw on napkins for guests.
West & south coasts + hill country
Peak season on the classic route: Colombo, Bentota, Galle, Mirissa, plus Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella. Dry, sunny, whale season in Mirissa. Book vehicles and hotels early for December–January — the island genuinely fills up.
Galle · Mirissa · Bentota · Ella · Kandy · Nuwara Eliya
East coast + Cultural Triangle
While the southwest gets its monsoon, the east shines: Arugam Bay's surf peaks, Trincomalee's water turns glass-clear, and Minneriya hosts The Gathering — hundreds of wild elephants at one reservoir. Fewer crowds, better light.
Arugam Bay · Trincomalee · Sigiriya · Minneriya · Polonnaruwa
The two-monsoon trick
Because the two monsoons hit opposite coasts, one side of Sri Lanka is almost always in season. There is no bad month to visit — only a wrong coast for that month. Tell us your dates and we'll route the trip around the weather, not through it.
Yala · Udawalawe · Sigiriya · Kandy — good most of the year
In a week: three or four bases, comfortably. In two weeks: six or seven without it feeling like a bus tour. The mistake we gently talk people out of every season is trying to do all ten in ten days — you'd spend more time in the van than in the places. Better to save a coast for the next trip; Sri Lanka rewards coming back.
